« Les femmes serrent la ceinture au gouvernement ! »

World March of Women Belgium

Presentation :

The world March of the women is a worldwide network of actions of struggle against poverty and the violence to the women. Born in 1996, the world March of the women quickly became an inescapable world movement and collected in 2000 about 6000 groups of women through 163 countries and territories of the world. In Belgium, the March mobilized more than 80 women's organizations and on 14th October 2000, some 35 000 women participated in an European demonstration two days before a closing march in New York in front of United Nations. The march allowed to make visible, to strengthen and to show solidarity the groups of Belgian women around common claims against the violence and the poverty towards the women. For 2000, the World March of Women became strongly active at the national and international level. The March developed numerous regional platforms. MMF-Belgium participated actively in various actions ; campaigns, demonstrations and commemorations of Women's days as 8th March, November 25th among others. Our purpose: require to the government and to the national authorities and international to implement all the claims presented every year, in order to assure an effective equality between men and women.

The National Coordination of World March of Women, through its advocacy, commits to the reinforcement of the equality of sexes. Starter of a theory which conceives the variable genre as the main and transverse barrier of social stratification. Our strategy is mainly built on this objective, to be able to, thereafter, amplify the results in a transverse way and transform indirectly the other dimensions of the status quo. So, our action is managed against the inequalities of nation, the discrimination of minorities and ethnic communities and economic poverty, as well as against all the forms of violence. At the same time, we claim a more egalitarian and more respectful, alternative world order with its inherent diversity. More specifically, the general objectives are: the struggle against the various violence to women as such, and their social eclipse; the fight of the poverty and the misery and the economic dependence; the opposition to the privatization of the public services ; against the militarization and the arms race.

  • Promote the equality between the women and the men and between the nations.
  • Support a vast popular educational process where all the women can analyze by themselves and for themselves the causes of their oppression and the possible alternatives.
  • Put forward the claims and the common alternatives to the movements of the society women, on the local, national, regional and international plan, around the poverty and around the violence towards the women.
  • Bring the governments, the decision-makers and the members of the civil society to support and to make the changes which are imperative
